Spanish –with nearly 500 million speakers– is the second most spoken language in the world as a mother tongue, only after Mandarin. There are currently close to 600 million people who speak Spanish, either as their mother tongue or as an additional language. It is the official language in 21 countries, and the second most important language in the United States, where there is a Spanish-speaking population that amounts to about 60 million people. This represents a fifth of its population. The importance of this language in research, politics, business, media, and social networks is unavoidable.

English is the official language in Australia, Canada (except the province of Quebec), the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and several Caribbean islands. It is also the lingua franca of the former British colonies, where English is not necessarily the mother tongue of the majority of the population, but its use is vital in everyday life. Such is the case in South Africa, where only about ten percent of the population speak English as their mother tongue, but it is the vehicular language at the national level and shares the status of official language along with 10 other languages. Hence, although it represents the most widely spoken language worldwide, with about 1.4 billion speakers, only about 380 million are native speakers of this language.
